From Darkness Into Light: The Invitation of the Spring Equinox
Sep 04, 2026
September brings with it a shift.
The days begin to stretch a little longer. The air starts to warm. New growth appears in places that, only weeks before, seemed dormant.
And here in the Southern Hemisphere, we move towards the Spring Equinox — a moment in the seasonal cycle that has long symbolised balance, renewal and emergence.
What is the Spring Equinox? The word equinox comes from the Latin words meaning equal night.Around the Spring Equinox, which falls in late September in the Southern Hemisphere, day and night reach a point of near-equal length before the balance begins to tip towards longer days and shorter nights. It is a threshold between seasons.Winter has been a time of darkness, rest and turning inward. Spring begins the movement outward again. The earth warms. Seeds germinate. Plants begin to flower. Animals become more active. What has been resting beneath the surface begins to emerge. And while we are part of modern lives that don't always follow the rhythms of the natural world, we are still part of nature ourselves. The seasons can offer us a mirror.
The Medicine of BalanceThe Equinox is a beautiful reminder that balance doesn't necessarily mean everything in our lives is perfectly equal.Balance is something we continually return to.There are seasons when we need more rest and seasons when we have energy to create.Times when we need solitude and times when we need community.Times for doing and times for simply being. The Equinox invites us to notice where we might have moved too far in one direction.
Where are you giving more than you are receiving?Where have you been pushing when you might need to soften?Where have you been hiding when perhaps it is time to step forward? What would coming back into balance look like for you now?
Sometimes the most powerful spiritual practices aren't about adding something new. They're about noticing what has become out of alignment.
What Has Been Growing Beneath the Surface?Spring is often associated with new beginnings, but new beginnings rarely appear from nowhere. Before the first green shoot breaks through the soil, something has already been happening underground.Roots have been forming.Seeds have been waiting.Energy has been gathering. The same can be true for us.You may have spent the past few months questioning, processing, releasing or simply feeling as though very little was happening. But periods of stillness aren't necessarily periods of stagnation.Sometimes they are preparation. As we move into spring, you might ask yourself:What has been quietly changing within me?Perhaps there is an idea you've been carrying.A conversation you've been avoiding.A boundary that needs strengthening.A creative impulse asking for attention.A part of yourself that you're ready to meet differently. You don't need to know exactly where it will lead.Spring simply asks us to notice what is ready for light.A Simple Spring Equinox PracticeYou don't need an elaborate ritual to mark the Equinox.Find somewhere quiet — outside if you can — and take a few moments to consciously acknowledge the changing season.Notice what is happening around you.The temperature of the air. The plants. The sounds. The quality of the light.
Then reflect on three things:What am I ready to leave in winter? What have you outgrown, completed or carried for long enough? What am I ready to nurture? What needs your attention, energy or protection as it begins to grow? What would bring me back into greater balance? Not what you should be doing. What genuinely feels supportive now?Write down whatever comes. You may even choose one small action you can take as you move into the new season. It doesn't need to be dramatic.A seed doesn't become a tree overnight.
Growing in CommunityThere is another part of spring that is easy to overlook. In nature, very little grows entirely alone.Healthy ecosystems are interconnected. Roots communicate beneath the soil. Plants create environments that allow other life to flourish. We need connection too.Sometimes our inner work needs solitude. But there are also times when growth becomes easier when we have somewhere to ask questions, share what we're experiencing and learn alongside people walking their own path.
That is part of what we've been creating inside our new Ankara online community.
Our Earth Community Membership is the foundational space within the Ankara community — somewhere to continue learning, receive support and stay connected as you integrate this work into everyday life.
